Heinrichs and more to wish Bob Marley a very happy birthday… in concert

We’re already looking ahead to shows in January and February, and one that will surely garner attention in the weeks ahead is the annual Bob Marley Birthday Bash on February 6. Yes, Bob Marley was born in February. (He would be 65 in 2010.) Not a very tropical time of year, but then, he was born in Jamaica, and is it ever not tropical there? It likely won’t feel tropical in Springfield that night, but several local (and even some non-local) bands inspired by Marley’s music will gather at The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern for an all-ages show celebrating the birth of the man whose tunes gave birth to a movement. Get the lineup of bands after the break.

The Planning Fallacy says hello again, just in time to say goodbye again

The Planning Fallacy says hello again, just in time to say goodbye again

Say this for hardcore group The Planning Fallacy: It’s true to its name. The planning fallacy is defined as people’s tendency to underestimate the amount of time it will take them to finish something. For most people, this means a basement dressed only in drywall or a room without cleaning. For the band The Planning Fallacy, it means breaking up more than two years ago, only to get back together a few weeks from now… for a farewell show. It took The Planning Fallacy a lot longer than they thought to officially finish as a group, but it’s you who stands to benefit from their underestimation. Find out how after the break.

Pssssst… Wanna be in a music video?

Pssssst… Wanna be in a music video?

Who doesn’t want the chance to be immortalized in a music video? It gave Courtney Cox a career. It gaves countless rap-video extras some added, um, notoriety in certain circles. Even if it doesn’t make you famous, it can be a ridiculous good time. Speaking of a good time, Nocturnal Nation–not ones for the low-key, quiet kind of rock experience–will be shooting a video of their own… and you can be in it.

So you missed the epic Fools Face reunion concert last night at The Outland Ballroom, eh? Darn that food coma. While you were napping, or perhaps watching basketball on television, the band whipped out numerous old favorites, not to mention a handful of covers. Luckily, local friend of the music scene and videographer extraordinaire Blondie was [...]

n the blink of an eye, local electro rock group We Are Like the Spider went from laying low and recording to doling out a new media morsel on a regular basis. The latest is a video, titled “Escendo,” lasting a little more than a minute and making use of a mask, a dark room and a flashing light to chilling effect. Is it a sneak preview of the group’s next recording with its full-band lineup? A tease for an album? The start of a video series? The band isn’t telling, only giving us the Spanish phrase “la hora esta cerca” near the end of the film, which translates to “the hour is near.” We just got chills again. Watch it after the break.

At last! New recordings from We Are Like the Spider–with the full band

Local electro-rock group We Are Like the Spider has been riding a wave of buzz since the knockout debut performance of its backing band in July. Shows have intentionally been sparse since then, in part because the band has been working on re-recording its material with live bass and drums. Now, five months after that debut show, the recording work bears fruit.

Remember when Yankton Sothern side project HeartPunch was a one-concert-only assemblage? Yeah, we didn’t think it would work out that way, either. The idea of a band fronted by the Fullers Earth guitarist/Bottlefish drummer and backed by The Skeletons‘ Lou Whitney, BringYourGreenHat’s Ritchie Allen and The Domino Kings‘ Steve Newman is just too good to [...]

Yes, the album has actually been out for a while, but tonight is The First Teenager Ever’s CD release party at The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern. Things are better when you have to wait for them, right? Think about it: You have to wait through dinner to get to dessert, you have to wait through the workday to get to happy hour and you have to wait through wait through most of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to get to the musical guests. Patience wins, basically, and TFTE is rewarding yours tonight with not only their show but those of Ghost Dance, White Atlantic and Kudzu. The show kicks off at 9 p.m. and is open to anyone 18 years or older. (Bring two more dollars than the standard $5 cover if you’re below drinking age.) For a 10-spot, you can see the show and get a copy of the (according to drummer Blake Walker, untitled, not self-titled) album. Sweet deal.

Naturally, there’s more:

As this is being written, you’re less than two hours away from the latest appearance of the sometimes elusive, relentlessly quirky and thoroughly entertaining Pilot Whale. That’s right, the solo project of J.R. Top (his not-solo project being Sweetwater Abilene) swims onto your radio airwaves today at noon on KSMU with a live in-studio performance [...]
