The Show Report, 12/17: A night for thrash ‘n’ ’stache
Posted on17. Dec, 2009 by thederosh.
One can already feel the week starting to wind down, which, of course, means a corresponding spike upward in the number of shows taking place throughout the city. Aren’t reverse correlations wonderful things? The show card is full of regular weekly shows back to make you dance, rock or both, but a couple switch things up a bit. One is the return of prog-metal group Super String Theory, a band that plays infrequently enough to justify calling each of its shows “the return of Super String Theory.” The latest return is tonight at The Outland Ballroom, paired with openers Hessian Crucible, Gnash Rambler and Offset. If you have never seen SST before, you’ve missed some of the fastest, craziest guitar work in local music, not to mention the best mustache, all courtesy of Aaron Roten.
Wanting more? Come get it after the break.

The Show Report, 11/27: The Ugly Mug is OPEN
Posted on27. Nov, 2009 by thederosh.
Tonight is a win for Springfield. After a year and a half of dormancy, the room once known as The Snorty Horse Saloon is back and better than ever. The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern opens tonight with a revamped room, all-new sound system and local blues powerhouse Tripwire on the stage. When things get rolling at 8 p.m., it will drown out the noise of months of speculation and hard work with a resounding shout from the speakers and the clinking of glasses among the crowd. Cheers and on with the show.

Openers confirmed for The Allen Array’s CD release show
Posted on29. Oct, 2009 by thederosh.
As we mentioned in a previous post, The Allen Array is readying its CD release show for November 13 at The Outland Ballroom, a moment the local hardcore group has been building up to since before it changed its name from Screwtape Letters. (Remember the help-us-raise-money-to-pay-for-recording show at The Blue Room back in May?)
It’s The Allen Array’s big night, to be sure, but we just got word of who else will be involved. Click and read, yo.

Project Independent rolls on; two local bands advance
Posted on28. Oct, 2009 by thederosh.
Last week’s Project Independent Showcase at The Outland Ballroom was a chance for four battling metal bands–As Shadows Collapse, Extreme Hate Frequency, Offset and Prodigies of the Fallen–to win a national contest for $50,000 worth of gear and a 60-day national headlining tour. Initially, we thought one of the local bands would get to move on to the next round of voting. We were wrong; two Springfield-area metal acts will take their shot at the national prize, and they’ll need your help to get there. Find out more after the break.

What, wrong Allen Array? Oh, you mean the one releasing an album…
Posted on28. Oct, 2009 by thederosh.
The Allen Array is the SETI Institute’s one-hectare telescope used for space surveillance. If aliens ever invade planet Earth, the Allen Array will aid SETI in being the group of people angrily waving its arms around and screaming “I told you so,” moments before some high-tech doohickie vaporizes them along with the rest of us. As long as that doesn’t happen before November 13, our own local The Allen Array–the hardcore group formerly known as Screwtape Letters–will have an album out and a party to go with it. Find out more after clicking.

The Marvelous Vernon returns
Posted on21. Oct, 2009 by thederosh.
It has become a day for bands rising from the dead. Okay, to be fair, this news came our way a few days ago, but we’re getting around to things as time allows. The Marvelous Vernon, who played a CD release show more than a year ago for the then-newly-released In Japan Enourmous We Are only to disappear from the local scene almost immediately afterward, are reportedly rehearsing again and preparing to play out.

The night kicks off with a run-through of the Credence Clearwater Revival album Cosmo’s Factory, followed by a performance of The Beatles‘ landmark album Let It Be. It’s [...]
