The Show Report, 12/17: A night for thrash ‘n’ ’stache

One can already feel the week starting to wind down, which, of course, means a corresponding spike upward in the number of shows taking place throughout the city. Aren’t reverse correlations wonderful things? The show card is full of regular weekly shows back to make you dance, rock or both, but a couple switch things up a bit. One is the return of prog-metal group Super String Theory, a band that plays infrequently enough to justify calling each of its shows “the return of Super String Theory.” The latest return is tonight at The Outland Ballroom, paired with openers Hessian Crucible, Gnash Rambler and Offset. If you have never seen SST before, you’ve missed some of the fastest, craziest guitar work in local music, not to mention the best mustache, all courtesy of Aaron Roten.

Wanting more? Come get it after the break.

Some good news for the new year ahead: Local hardcore group Fearless Before Persecution, dismantled in June 2008, is back with a new lineup, a revived concert to headline and a promotion company back from hiatus to put it all on. We’ll tell you more after the break.

Okay, so maybe Flea (above) wouldn’t return the phone call. Radio-friendly hard rock isn’t his style anyway. Nonetheless, local group As Of Now is putting out the all-points bulletin looking for someone to man (or woman) the four-string position as it prepares to book shows and tours, and any eligible candidate is encouraged to chime in and try out. Of course, two months ago this was all unfathomable. Remember when the band broke up in the fall? Man, what a weird five minutes that was!

Tonight is a win for Springfield. After a year and a half of dormancy, the room once known as The Snorty Horse Saloon is back and better than ever. The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern opens tonight with a revamped room, all-new sound system and local blues powerhouse Tripwire on the stage. When things get rolling at 8 p.m., it will drown out the noise of months of speculation and hard work with a resounding shout from the speakers and the clinking of glasses among the crowd. Cheers and on with the show.

Halloween is far behind us–indeed, it’s almost Thanksgiving–but screw the turkeys and let’s talk horror punk for a minute. There’s good reason: The Misfits, the band that gave us the quintessential “little guy you don’t want to mess with” in former singer Glenn Danzig, gets its own tribute show this Friday at Lindberg’s with opening act The BoogeyMen. Find out more after the break.

A pair of interesting details have us mentally circling this Friday’s Patton Alley Pub concert on our mental calendars. Yes, we know; that’s a lot of “mental.” There are intriguing reasons to catch both their Friday show, though, neither of which we were aware of until now.

How’s this for an under-the-radar concert: Two weeks before it’s due to happen we receive word that the Minneapolis-based rock group Motion City Soundtrack is scheduled to perform at The Shrine Mosque November 20. No official word from the Shrine yet, but its online ticket distributor, MetroTix, lists the event on its site; just don’t try actually buying tickets yet.

The Radiance Effect just played a rare show in Southwest Missouri at The River Church in Forsyth, but for the purposes of this post we’re going to concentrate on one of their opening acts instead. Faith Through Chaos, a newly formed act consisting of Meagan Dulany on vocals, Chad High and Tim Michalak on guitars, [...]

As we mentioned in a previous post, The Allen Array is readying its CD release show for November 13 at The Outland Ballroom, a moment the local hardcore group has been building up to since before it changed its name from Screwtape Letters. (Remember the help-us-raise-money-to-pay-for-recording show at The Blue Room back in May?)

It’s The Allen Array’s big night, to be sure, but we just got word of who else will be involved. Click and read, yo.

Project Independent rolls on; two local bands advance

Last week’s Project Independent Showcase at The Outland Ballroom was a chance for four battling metal bands–As Shadows Collapse, Extreme Hate Frequency, Offset and Prodigies of the Fallen–to win a national contest for $50,000 worth of gear and a 60-day national headlining tour. Initially, we thought one of the local bands would get to move on to the next round of voting. We were wrong; two Springfield-area metal acts will take their shot at the national prize, and they’ll need your help to get there. Find out more after the break.

The Allen Array is the SETI Institute’s one-hectare telescope used for space surveillance. If aliens ever invade planet Earth, the Allen Array will aid SETI in being the group of people angrily waving its arms around and screaming “I told you so,” moments before some high-tech doohickie vaporizes them along with the rest of us. As long as that doesn’t happen before November 13, our own local The Allen Array–the hardcore group formerly known as Screwtape Letters–will have an album out and a party to go with it. Find out more after clicking.
