Heinrichs and more to wish Bob Marley a very happy birthday… in concert
Posted on30. Dec, 2009 by thederosh.
We’re already looking ahead to shows in January and February, and one that will surely garner attention in the weeks ahead is the annual Bob Marley Birthday Bash on February 6. Yes, Bob Marley was born in February. (He would be 65 in 2010.) Not a very tropical time of year, but then, he was born in Jamaica, and is it ever not tropical there? It likely won’t feel tropical in Springfield that night, but several local (and even some non-local) bands inspired by Marley’s music will gather at The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern for an all-ages show celebrating the birth of the man whose tunes gave birth to a movement. Get the lineup of bands after the break.

The Show Report, 12/26: Reunion Show Weekend, Part Deux
Posted on26. Dec, 2009 by thederosh.
On yesterday’s episode of The Show Report…
Blaine: How dare you insult me like that, Forrest?! I am not a fool! I’m just a man trying to keep this family together while his wife receives treatment for her brain tumor. I sir, am not a fool, and there is nothing wrong with my face!
Forrest: No, Blaine, I said Fools Face, and I wasn’t talking about you. They were a really big band in Springfield years back, and they reunited last night. There are lots more bands reuniting tonight, too. Sort of a “To Be Continued…” in a way.

The Show Report, 12/25: Reunion Show Weekend begins
Posted on25. Dec, 2009 by thederosh.
Merry Christmas, indeed. The holidays always bring out-of-towners back to Springfield for some musical frolicking, meaning this is one of the peak times of year to catch a favorite band from yesteryear back onstage. There are several going on this weekend, starting with Fools Face at The Outland Ballroom, a group that led the way for local pop-rock in the early ’80s. Dale McCoy, Jimmy Frink, Jim Wirt (pictured above, having a rock ‘n’ roll moment), Brian Coffman and Tommy Dwyer (hopefully, in the last case; he didn’t make it last year) will be back onstage in Springfield for the first time since, well, Christmastime last year when they played at The High Life Live Martini Lounge. You’ll likely have a little more elbow room this year… though not much. It will be packed.

The Show Report, 12/18: The “Sex Mansion” is now open
Posted on18. Dec, 2009 by thederosh.
Yes, the album has actually been out for a while, but tonight is The First Teenager Ever’s CD release party at The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern. Things are better when you have to wait for them, right? Think about it: You have to wait through dinner to get to dessert, you have to wait through the workday to get to happy hour and you have to wait through wait through most of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to get to the musical guests. Patience wins, basically, and TFTE is rewarding yours tonight with not only their show but those of Ghost Dance, White Atlantic and Kudzu. The show kicks off at 9 p.m. and is open to anyone 18 years or older. (Bring two more dollars than the standard $5 cover if you’re below drinking age.) For a 10-spot, you can see the show and get a copy of the (according to drummer Blake Walker, untitled, not self-titled) album. Sweet deal.
Naturally, there’s more:

The Show Report, 12/11: Dia Muerto?
Posted on11. Dec, 2009 by thederosh.
Here at FourFour HQ, we find the phrase “Dead Day” to be a gross misrepresentation of what today actually is. Yeah, we get that local universities are heading into final exams and are allowing students a free day to devote to studying (cough), but today and tonight are by no means without life. As evidence, we submit Exhibit A: John Henry & The Engine comes to Springfield to release the vinyl pressings of its I Don’t Wanna Know EP, and brings Truett & The Traitors along for the ride. The boys will rock and the girls will swoon, you can count on that. The EP, a rootsier progression from the band’s previous album, Under the Yellow Moon, is already available for $2.97 on iTunes, but tonight is the first time you can pick up the physical copy. Vinyl lives!
Know what? That’s not even the only CD release party you can go to tonight. More–lots more–after the break.

The First Teenager Ever announces CD release concert
Posted on07. Dec, 2009 by thederosh.
If a CD is released and there’s no corresponding party, did the release really happen? The First Teenager Ever won’t give you the chance to find out. The band’s album has been out for a little while now, sure, but it’s finally party time and the band is throwing one in style. Bring a pointy hat and streamers… okay, maybe not, but be prepared to get your new-album groove on. Details after the break.

The Show Report, 11/27: The Ugly Mug is OPEN
Posted on27. Nov, 2009 by thederosh.
Tonight is a win for Springfield. After a year and a half of dormancy, the room once known as The Snorty Horse Saloon is back and better than ever. The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern opens tonight with a revamped room, all-new sound system and local blues powerhouse Tripwire on the stage. When things get rolling at 8 p.m., it will drown out the noise of months of speculation and hard work with a resounding shout from the speakers and the clinking of glasses among the crowd. Cheers and on with the show.

Chris Schultz benefit show scheduled for December 19
Posted on24. Nov, 2009 by thederosh.
The local music community took another blow to its ranks with the death last month of 37-year-old Christopher Schultz, guitarist (and later vocalist, too) for onetime local hardcore punk group Violent Karma. His death on October 9 left five children without a father and many friends devastated. A hole that large in a life can’t be filled, but Springfield’s musicians are coming together to help start the process with a show to honor Schultz’s life and legacy, all while taking peripheral strains off his family’s shoulders. We’ll tell you more after the break.

The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern: A Preview
Posted on19. Nov, 2009 by thederosh.
It has been five months since the initial announcement came that Springfield would be getting a new medium-sized venue. It’s hard to believe we have waited that long for The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern to become a reality, but after co-owner Brian Matney gave us the guided tour of the new facility we came away feeling as though it was worth the wait. What’s coming next Friday (November 27) may be the most thought-out, professional venue the city has seen in years, possibly ever. Read on for a full sneak preview, complete with photo gallery.

It’s Finally Time: Ugly Mug Tavern confirms opening Friday, November 27
Posted on17. Nov, 2009 by thederosh.
We have been telling you since the summer about the rebirth of the venue once known as The Snorty Horse Saloon inside the Budget Lodge just north of Interstate 44. The venue, now known as The Ugly Mug Live Music Tavern, was scheduled to open in mid-September, but delays in construction (nothing new in Springfield, or elsewhere, for that matter) pushed the date back. There was talk of a Halloween-weekend show that never materialized, and since then there has been silence on the Ugly Mug front. Until now. It’s finally time to throw the doors open on Springfield’s most anticipated new venue since Lindberg’s reopened more than six months ago, and we’ve got details after the break.
